New Update on Shadow of the Colossus Film

Summary

  • The Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation receives an update from director Andy Muschietti.
  • Muschietti confirms the project is still active, with ongoing discussions about its budget and the game's popularity.
  • Sony Pictures announced the live-action project over ten years ago in 2009, with the game’s director Fumito Ueda involved in the production.

The acclaimed Argentine director Andy Muschietti, known for his work on the It remakes and The Flash, has provided an exciting update on the long-awaited Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. Originally announced by Sony Pictures in 2009, the project saw the involvement of the game's director, Fumito Ueda. Before Muschietti took the helm, Josh Trank, known for Chronicle, was set to direct but had to step away due to scheduling conflicts.

In addition to the Shadow of the Colossus adaptation, Sony revealed a new slate of live-action films based on their popular games at CES 2025. This includes a Helldivers movie, despite comparisons to the 1997 film Starship Troopers, and both a Horizon Zero Dawn movie and a Ghost of Tsushima animation.

During an interview on Radio TU’s La Baulera del Coso program, Muschietti emphasized that the Shadow of the Colossus film is far from abandoned. He acknowledged the lengthy development period, attributing delays to factors beyond personal interest, such as the game's popularity and the substantial budget required for the project. Muschietti praised Shadow of the Colossus as a "masterpiece," despite not being a "big gamer" himself, and confirmed he has played the game multiple times. He also mentioned favoring a particular script among the various versions developed for the film.

Shadow of the Colossus Film Adaptation Gets Update From Director

Other games have drawn inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus, including Capcom's 2024 action RPG, Dragon's Dogma 2. However, Sony’s original action-adventure game remains a beloved classic. Fumito Ueda, the mastermind behind Shadow of the Colossus, has since founded his own studio, GenDesign. At The Game Awards 2024, GenDesign announced a new sci-fi game that reflects the profound isolation seen in the 2005 epic. Despite the high-definition remakes concluding with the PlayStation 4 version in 2018, the legacy of Shadow of the Colossus continues to thrive, promising to captivate both fans and newcomers in its upcoming live-action adaptation.
