Sony is phasing out PlayStation 4 titles from PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly offerings and the Games Catalog beginning January 2026, marking a complete transition to PlayStation 5 content.
A New Era Begins
The announcement came alongside February 2025's monthly game reveals, signaling Sony's evolving strategy for its subscription services. Gone are the days when PS4 titles dominated PlayStation Plus benefits.
"As we embrace the PS5 era, PS4 games will become an occasional treat rather than a regular feature in PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog," Sony explained. Existing PS4 titles claimed by subscribers remain accessible, while Games Catalog selections will follow standard rotation policies.
Focusing on Next-Gen
Sony emphasized its commitment to enhancing PlayStation Plus: "We're refining the PlayStation Plus experience with premium benefits - exclusive discounts, multiplayer access, cloud saves, and crucially, dedicated PS5 content moving forward."
The PlayStation 4 launched in 2013, succeeded seven years later by PlayStation 5 in 2020. With most active users now on current-gen hardware, Sony notes a clear shift towards PS5 content consumption.
While Sony hasn't confirmed whether PS4 classics might migrate to the Classics Catalog, fans can expect updates as the 2026 transition approaches.
