Sonic Inspired Indie Game Unveiled

Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-Inspired Fan Game

Sonic Galactic, a fan-made title from Starteam, evokes the spirit of Sonic Mania, capturing the charm of classic Sonic gameplay and pixel art. This labor of love, four years in the making, debuted at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo. The game imagines a 32-bit Sonic adventure, akin to a hypothetical Sega Saturn release.

The game's second demo (early 2025) offers a nostalgic 2D platforming experience reminiscent of the Genesis era, while adding unique twists. Players can control the iconic trio – Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles – across new zones. Joining the roster are two new playable characters: Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble) seeking revenge against Dr. Eggman, and Tunnel the Mole, hailing from Illusion Island.

Each character boasts unique pathways within each zone, mirroring Sonic Mania's design. Special stages, clearly inspired by Mania, challenge players to collect rings within a time limit in a 3D environment. While a complete playthrough of Sonic's levels takes roughly an hour, the additional characters each have a single level, resulting in a total playtime of around two hours. The demo provides a compelling taste of what this ambitious fan project offers. Its pixel art style, reminiscent of Sonic Mania, appeals to fans who appreciate the timeless aesthetic of classic Sonic games.
