A unique Street Fighter tournament, dubbed "Sleep Fighter," is set to take place in Japan, emphasizing the importance of sleep for optimal performance. Here's a closer look at this innovative event and its notable participants.
Street Fighter Tournament “Sleep Fighter” Announced in Japan
Players Need to Start Racking Up Sleep Points a Week Before Tourney
In a groundbreaking move, the "Sleep Fighter" tournament, backed by Capcom and organized by SS Pharmaceuticals, introduces a novel rule: players must ensure they get adequate sleep. This event is designed to promote SS Pharmaceuticals' sleep-aid drug, Drewell, by highlighting the benefits of rest.
The tournament follows a team-based format where three players per team compete in a "best-of-three" match to accumulate points. Teams advance by earning points not only through victories but also through "Sleep Points," calculated based on their sleep hours in the week before the tournament.
Participants must log at least six hours of sleep per night in the week leading up to the event, totaling 126 hours. Failure to meet this requirement results in a penalty of five points per hour short. Additionally, the team with the highest total sleep time earns the privilege of setting the tournament's match conditions.
SS Pharmaceuticals is using this tournament to underscore the importance of sleep for peak performance. Their campaign, "Let's Do the Challenge, Let's Sleep First," aims to foster healthy sleep habits across Japan. Sleep Fighter marks the first esports event to penalize insufficient sleep, as noted on the official website.
The Sleep Fighter tournament is scheduled for August 31 at Ryogoku KFC Hall Tokyo, with attendance limited to 100 people selected via lottery. For international fans, the event will be live-streamed on YouTube and Twitch, with more broadcast details forthcoming on the official tournament website and Twitter (X) account.
The lineup includes over a dozen professional players and streamers, featuring notable figures such as two-time EVO champion "Itazan" Itabashi Zangief and top Street Fighter player Dogura, promising a day filled with competitive gaming and a focus on sleep wellness.
