Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nearing Release, Says Writer

Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy, the acclaimed director behind Deadpool & Wolverine, is still actively working on his upcoming Star Wars film. Jonathan Tropper, the writer attached to the project, recently shared an encouraging update with Screen Rant, expressing his enthusiasm and hinting that the film might be ready sooner than expected. "I am [excited] too," Tropper stated. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

Details about Levy's Star Wars project remain largely under wraps, but we do know it will be set after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has previously outlined the timeline, noting, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

In a conversation with Deadline, Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's movie will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this eagerly awaited film.

While fans may have to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027, Tropper's optimistic words suggest that progress is being made. Disney's last Star Wars film, Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, released in 2019, received mixed reviews, and since then, several other planned films have been canceled, including projects from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. A Star Wars movie initially slated for late 2026 was also recently removed from Disney's schedule.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new Star Wars feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie helmed by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey following the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping away after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. However, Rey remains a key focus for Disney's future Star Wars plans, with recent reports indicating she will appear in multiple upcoming films.

Disney's Star Wars slate doesn't stop there. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which will not continue the Skywalker Saga as initially rumored.

The next Star Wars project to hit screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch, promising an immersive continuation of the critically acclaimed series.
