Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has finally released its long-awaited final patch, marking the end of its epic journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled BG3’s Patch 8, the game's last major update. Following this significant update, BG3 experienced a notable surge in player count, climbing just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously averaging around 60,000 concurrent players, the game now boasts over 169,000 players as of the latest reports.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke celebrated the sudden influx of players on Twitter (X) on April 22, attributing the rise to the game's robust mod support. This success allows Larian to shift focus to their "next big thing." It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will be moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative avenues.

In light of this, D&D's parent company, Wizards of the Coast, along with Hasbro, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.

Compared to the November announcement, the final patch notes include an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring a polished conclusion to BG3.

Larian Studios' dedication to improving BG3 is evident in the extensive updates and fixes included in this final patch. Although this marks their last major update, Larian remains committed to supporting the game's modding community.
