Osmos is back on Google Play with a brand-new port after a brief absence

Authore: EmilyUpdate:Jan 24,2025

Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, developer Hemisphere Games has resurrected the title with a completely revamped port.

For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique, award-winning puzzle where players absorb microorganisms to grow, while avoiding being absorbed themselves. Its simple yet engaging gameplay made it a hit upon its 2010 release, but Android users have been unable to enjoy it until now.

Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that the initial Android version, developed with Apportable, became difficult to update after Apportable's closure. The game's removal from Google Play was due to incompatibility with modern Android systems (it only ran on obsolete 32-bit systems). The new port addresses these issues.

If you need further convincing, watch the gameplay trailer (above). Osmos' innovative mechanics have influenced numerous subsequent games, and its absence from the social media landscape during its initial release is a missed opportunity – it would undoubtedly be a TikTok sensation.

Osmos offers a nostalgic experience, reminiscent of a time when mobile gaming felt boundless. While it's a unique throwback, there are many excellent mobile puzzle games available today. Explore our list of the top 25 best puzzle games for iOS and Android for more options.
