Nintendo Switch Update Bans Game Sharing Exploit

Authore: ScarlettUpdate:Dec 26,2025

Nintendo has released its latest Switch system update, introducing new features like Virtual Game Cards ahead of the Switch 2 launch. However, this update closes a popular method players used to share digital games across multiple consoles simultaneously.

As reported by Eurogamer, Switch owners previously could play the same digital game online simultaneously - one person on the primary console and another logged into their account on a secondary Switch. The new Virtual Game Cards system eliminates this workaround.

A New Workaround Emerges

Players have discovered they can still share digital games by going offline. By enabling the Online Licenses option in profile settings, users can play digital games without Virtual Game Cards - provided:

  • The game isn't being played elsewhere
  • The other Switch is offline

The official setting description clarifies:

"Enabled online licenses allow digital software playback without Virtual Game Cards when connected online. However, only the purchasing Nintendo Account can play, limits apply:
  • Other console users cannot access these games
  • Virtual Game Cards override this setting
  • Simultaneous use across consoles is restricted"

Eurogamer verified this system still permits shared play when one console operates offline. However, the ability to play the same game online simultaneously appears removed.

Community Backlash

Gamers are expressing frustration across ResetEra and Reddit about losing their previous game-sharing setups. Many highlight multiplayer titles like Splatoon and Minecraft where families enjoyed playing together through this method.

The change effectively doubles game costs for households with multiple Switch users. While technically closing a loophole, players argue it provided valuable functionality for families gaming together.

These modifications arrive weeks before Switch 2's launch, which will implement the same system alongside Game-Key Cards. Notably, many physical Switch 2 games will require additional online downloads rather than containing full games on cartridges.
