Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders Face Store Restrictions to Combat Scalpers

Authore: EmeryUpdate:Apr 24,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and is expected to be in high demand. To ensure that genuine Switch enthusiasts have the best chance to secure a pre-order, Nintendo is implementing specific measures through the My Nintendo Store. If you have a Nintendo Account, you can register your interest in pre-ordering the Nintendo Switch 2 system along with "select accessories." Once your turn comes up, you'll receive an invitation email valid for 72 hours. However, to qualify for this opportunity, you must meet certain criteria: you need to have played your current Switch for at least 50 hours total and have been a Nintendo Switch Online member for a minimum of 12 months by April 2, 2025.

Nintendo has outlined that invitation emails will be sent on a first-come, first-served basis to those who meet these requirements. These invitations are non-transferable and will be sent to the email address linked to your Nintendo Account. There's a one-per-account limit on both the system and each accessory during this period. You can express interest in either the base Nintendo Switch 2 system or a bundle that includes Mario Kart World. Once you place an order, it will be shipped, but Nintendo cannot guarantee delivery on release day due to processing and shipment times.

These measures are designed to prioritize genuine gamers over scalpers, ensuring that the Nintendo Switch 2 ends up in the hands of those who intend to use it for gaming. Scalping has been a significant issue with high-demand products like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and even the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Valve's approach with the Steam Deck, which used a queue system linked to Steam account activity, proved effective, and it appears Nintendo is adopting a similar strategy with the My Nintendo Store process.

While the My Nintendo Store is one way to secure a Switch 2, other options will also be available. This approach should help long-time Switch owners navigate the potential frenzy of securing a launch day pre-order more smoothly.
