Nintendo has shed light on potential compatibility issues with its newly announced GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2. Introduced during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month, the small print initially highlighted that the controller was designed for use exclusively with Nintendo GameCube games available through the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, not other Switch 2 titles.
In a recent clarification, Nintendo emphasized that the GameCube controller is primarily intended for playing GameCube games within the Nintendo Classics collection. While it might be possible to use the controller with other Nintendo Switch 2 games, players should be aware that they "may encounter some issues" due to the controller's lack of modern features and buttons found on newer models.
Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is compatible solely with the Nintendo Switch 2 system and not with the original Nintendo Switch. "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games," Nintendo stated to Nintendo Life.
"Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."
