Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatibility Limited to GameCube Classics

Authore: AndrewUpdate:Apr 21,2025

The excitement is building as the Nintendo GameCube is set to join the Nintendo Switch Online service, coinciding with the launch of the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. Alongside this, a new classic GameCube controller is also on the horizon, promising to bring a touch of nostalgia to the modern gaming experience. However, there's a catch: the fine print suggests that this new GameCube controller for the Switch 2 might be exclusively designed for playing GameCube games.

In the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer, a notice was spotted stating: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This implies that the GameCube controller will primarily function when you're enjoying GameCube titles through the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack, and may not be compatible with other Switch 2 games.

As noted by VGC, it's important to remember that past Nintendo controllers with similar warnings haven't always been strictly limited. Enthusiasts have often found ways to use retro controllers in various contexts. Interestingly, this disclaimer is absent from the Nintendo of America version of the trailer.

Despite this, the classic GameCube controller has a sufficient number of buttons to handle many common gameplay inputs on the Switch 2. This could be a way of setting user expectations or preventing potential frustrations, such as trying to use the GameCube controller as a mouse.

Even if the new GameCube controller isn't to your liking, there's good news for existing accessory owners: Nintendo has confirmed that the GameCube Controller adapter will be compatible with the Switch 2 dock via a USB port. This means those who invested in the adapter during the Wii U era will continue to benefit from their purchase.

The Classic GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to launch alongside the new console, though the specific pre-order date remains under wraps. The pre-order process has been somewhat turbulent due to U.S. tariffs causing disruptions.

This major update to the Nintendo Switch Online library will open up a treasure trove of classic 2000s-era titles for subscribers. At launch this summer, you'll be able to dive into games like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2. The library is set to grow in the coming years, with teased additions including Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more.
