Netflix is reportedly developing a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series based on The Forgotten Realms setting, according to industry reports.
The project is being helmed by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy and writer-showrunner Drew Crevello (WeCrashed), with Hasbro's involvement. The Forgotten Realms serves as the iconic fantasy world for Dungeons & Dragons, previously featured in the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and the acclaimed video game Baldur's Gate 3.
Netflix's Major Fantasy Gamble
Deadline describes the potential adaptation as "one of Netflix's biggest TV bets in the fantasy space to date." Crevello has reportedly written the pilot and will serve as showrunner, though Netflix and Hasbro have yet to officially confirm details.
After extended negotiations, the series is now in active development at Netflix. Industry insider Nellie Andreeva suggests the show could potentially launch a broader Dungeons & Dragons universe if successful.
While the live-action series moves forward, there's still no concrete update on a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, despite its passionate fanbase. The film struggled commercially for Paramount Pictures.
In November 2023, lead actor Chris Pine expressed optimism about returning for a sequel, stating he was "pretty confident" it would happen. However, no official announcements have followed. Paramount CEO Brian Robbins has indicated openness to a follow-up—provided the budget is reduced significantly.
In the meantime, fans can enjoy Amazon's Secret Level anthology series, which recently featured a Dungeons & Dragons animated installment.
