MultiVersus to Close After Season 5 Ends in May

Player First Games has announced that MultiVersus Season 5 will mark the end of the Warner Bros. platform fighting game, with services concluding on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST. This decision was shared through a blog post on the studio's website, detailing the game's journey from its launch on May 28 of the previous year to its upcoming final season starting February 4, 2025. While online play will cease, Player First Games assures players that all earned and purchased content will remain accessible offline through local gameplay and training modes.

The MultiVersus team expressed their gratitude to the community, stating, "Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. All of us on the Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games teams have poured our heart and soul into this game. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."

As of today, real-money transactions for MultiVersus are no longer available, though players can still use Gleamium and character tokens to acquire in-game content until the end of support on May 30. The game will also be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store at that time.

The termination of MultiVersus follows reports of its commercial underperformance, contributing to a $100 million writedown for Warner Bros. Discovery's games sector, as revealed in a November financial call. This adds to a total of $300 million in losses following the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in January. Furthermore, Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad is set to leave the company after a challenging year, as reported by Variety last week.

"We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business, a key factor in this year’s studio profit decline,” stated Gunnar Wiedenfels, chief financial officer, during the November call.

Despite the closure announcement just days before its one-year anniversary, MultiVersus Season 5 promises to end on a high note. Alongside typical seasonal content, new characters Lola Bunny and Aquaman will join the roster. Lola Bunny will be unlockable as a daily calendar reward, while Aquaman will be available through the battle pass, both starting next week.
