NetEase's post-apocalyptic survival game, Once Human, has achieved a remarkable 230,000 peak concurrent players on Steam since its PC launch. This impressive debut also secured it the seventh spot on the top sellers list and fifth place among the most-played games. However, this initial surge might mask a potential player decline.
The game, slated for a mobile release in September, has already announced exciting updates. These include a PvP mode pitting the Mayflies and Rosetta factions against each other, and a new PvE area in a challenging northern mountain region with fresh enemies. Once Human, set in a world ravaged by a catastrophic event leading to supernatural occurrences, is one of NetEase's most anticipated titles.
Interestingly, despite the successful PC launch, NetEase has delayed the mobile release, still targeting September. Nevertheless, Once Human maintains its strong position as a top seller and a highly played game.
A Cause for Concern? The use of "peak" player count (230,000) suggests the average player count may be significantly lower. This early drop-off, especially considering the initial 300,000 Steam wishlists, could be a warning sign for NetEase.
While NetEase is a mobile gaming giant, its foray into the PC market is ambitious. Though Once Human boasts impressive graphics and gameplay, a rapid shift in their primary audience might prove challenging.
