1047 Games, the creators of the popular "Halo meets Portal" shooter, Splitgate, have announced a sequel: Splitgate 2, launching in 2025. This highly anticipated follow-up promises a fresh take on the fast-paced arena shooter experience while retaining core elements that made the original a hit.

A Fresh Coat of Paint on Familiar Gameplay

A cinematic trailer released on July 18th showcases Splitgate 2's updated visuals, powered by Unreal Engine 5. While retaining the signature portal mechanics, the developers emphasize a reimagined approach to gameplay depth and longevity. CEO Ian Proulx aims to create "a game that can last a decade or more," focusing on building "a deep and satisfying gameplay loop." Marketing Head Hilary Goldstein adds that portal mechanics have been refined to cater to both casual and expert players.

The game will be free-to-play and introduce a faction system with three distinct groups – Aeros (dashing mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). Importantly, Splitgate 2 will not be a hero shooter in the style of Overwatch or Valorant.

New Features and Expanded Universe

The trailer hints at new maps, weapons, and the introduction of dual-wielding. Further gameplay details will be revealed at Gamescom 2024. While there's no single-player campaign, a companion mobile app will offer lore-rich comics, character cards, and a faction selection quiz.

Splitgate 2's development marks a significant step for 1047 Games. The original Splitgate's unexpected success, driven by a well-received demo, led to server capacity issues and highlighted the demand for this unique blend of fast-paced shooting and strategic portal gameplay. The sequel aims to deliver on the promise of a revolutionary, not just evolutionary, update to the formula. Splitgate 2 is slated for release on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One in 2025.
