Guitar Hero is coming to mobile, and stumbles out the block with AI announcement

Authore: CarterUpdate:May 02,2025

When it comes to fast-and-furious rhythm games, although the genre never really took off in the West, there was one huge exception: Guitar Hero. Now, this legendary franchise is set to make a comeback, and it's excitingly heading to the mobile platform! However, Activision's announcement has stumbled right out of the gate, akin to a kneeslide off the stage and into the orchestra pit.

The announcement, instead of being a captivating trailer or a detailed press release, was carried by a blatantly AI-generated promotional image on Instagram. This choice has overshadowed the return of the iconic franchise, especially given another recent controversy involving AI use in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

As for what Guitar Hero Mobile will offer in terms of visuals and sound, we're currently left in the dark. The series did grace mobile devices nearly 20 years ago, as you can see below, but fans are hoping for a significantly more impressive revival this time around.

Many have criticized the art used in the Guitar Hero Mobile announcement as egregiously bad, and it may not have even been created with the most modern image generators. This could spell trouble for Guitar Hero Mobile, potentially making it dead on arrival, especially with strong competition from popular games like Space Ape's BeatStar.

While the idea of Guitar Hero returning is incredibly exciting, and I can see immense potential for it on mobile, it's undeniable that Activision has fumbled the ball yet again, despite all the positive aspects surrounding the franchise's revival.
