11 bit Studios has unveiled an exciting new project within the Frostpunk universe: Frostpunk 1886. This isn't just another sequel but a full-fledged remake of the original Frostpunk, reimagined using the powerful Unreal Engine. Announced via a Twitter (X) post on April 24, this revelation has stirred anticipation among fans and newcomers alike.

Original Frostpunk Remade Using The Unreal Engine

In a bold move, 11 bit Studios is shifting away from their in-house Liquid Engine, which powered the first Frostpunk, to harness the capabilities of Unreal Engine. This decision comes on the heels of their successful use of Unreal Engine 5 in Frostpunk 2. The studio expressed in a Steam post on the same day that they aim to enhance the original game with "improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer."

Frostpunk 1886 promises to deliver a completely new Purpose Path, long-awaited mod support, and more, all while preserving the essence of the original game. This project represents a significant evolution, showcasing what could have been achieved with the first game had the Unreal Engine been utilized from the start.

Eyeing A 2027 Release

Currently in development, Frostpunk 1886 is slated for a 2027 release. 11 bit Studios is dedicated to making this remake an excellent entry point for new players while also satisfying the desires of long-time fans. They envision a game that players will want to experience repeatedly.

Looking ahead, the studio plans to introduce new content through future DLCs, aiming to release games more frequently than their previous pace of once every five or more years. As fans eagerly await Frostpunk 1886, they can continue enjoying Frostpunk 2, which is already available on PC. Additionally, Frostpunk 2 will soon launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S this summer, accompanied by a free major update on May 8, as outlined in their roadmap.
