Capcom Updates ‘Resident Evil 4′, ‘Resident Evil Village’, and ‘Resident Evil 7’ on iOS With Online DRM

TouchArcade Rating:

Capcom's latest update for *Resident Evil 7 biohazard*, *Resident Evil 4* Remake, and *Resident Evil Village* on iOS and iPadOS, released just an hour ago, has introduced a significant change that impacts the gaming experience. Previously, these premium-priced ports were optimized for mobile and could be played offline. However, the new update adds an online DRM (Digital Rights Management) system that checks your purchase history every time you launch the game. This means you must be connected to the internet to verify ownership of the game or any DLC before you can access the title screen. If you're not connected, or if you decline the check, the game will close.

Before this update, I confirmed that all three games could be launched and played offline. Now, with the new alert system in place, clicking "no" to the purchase check results in the game shutting down. This change is disappointing and detracts from the overall quality of these games, as they were previously more user-friendly without the need for constant online verification.

While some may not mind this change, I find the addition of online DRM to games that have already been purchased to be problematic. Ideally, Capcom should consider alternative methods for verifying purchases, perhaps less frequently or in a way that doesn't require an internet connection every time the game is launched. Such changes can make it more challenging to recommend these premium-priced ports to new players.

If you haven't yet tried these games, they are available for free on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
