Buy Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Before Switch 2 Release

During Nintendo's April Direct, the tech giant unveiled all the exciting details about the Switch 2, and since then, fans in the U.S. have been eagerly awaiting the opening of preorders. While the console's price was somewhat expected, the cost of first-party games at launch raised some eyebrows, especially with Mario Kart World set to hit the shelves at a hefty $80. Additionally, Nintendo has introduced a new line of Switch 2 accessories, which have seen price hikes compared to their original Switch counterparts, and prices have even increased since the initial announcement.

One particular accessory that caught my attention was the new Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at a staggering $85. As someone who already owns multiple Switch Pro controllers, the thought of needing to purchase a new version was daunting. Thankfully, Nintendo confirmed in a developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will indeed be compatible with the Switch 2, much to my relief.

While many might opt for the newer Switch 2 Pro controller, it's not necessary for most games. If you already have a Switch Pro controller, you're set and can save that $80 for new games instead. For those without a Pro controller and planning to buy the Switch 2, the standard Switch Pro controller remains a more budget-friendly option at $69.99.

There's a chance these older controllers might sell out before the Switch 2 arrives, making way for the new model. Amazon is already facing stock shortages and mainly offers third-party alternatives. Alongside the compatibility of the regular Switch Pro controller, Nintendo has confirmed that the original Joy-Con controllers will also work with the Switch 2 – though we typically recommend the Switch Pro controller for a better gaming experience in most games.

When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?

If the new Switch 2 Pro controller is the only accessory you're eager to get, you'll need to wait until the console's launch day. The new controller will be officially available on June 5, alongside the Switch 2. You can start preordering the new console and its accessories on April 24. Keep in mind, the Switch 2 Pro controller is exclusive to the Switch 2 and won't work with the standard Switch.
