Matajuegos, an innovative indie co-op from Argentina, has exciting news for fans of unique gaming experiences: their acclaimed surrealist documentary game, Atuel, is set to launch on PC and Android later this year. The game's Steam page is already live, allowing eager players to pre-register. Google Play pre-registration is expected to follow suit soon.
Originally launched on itch.io in September 2022, Atuel quickly captured the gaming community's attention with its distinctive blend of documentary storytelling, experimental gameplay, and mesmerizing dreamlike visuals. The game's innovative approach earned it the prestigious 'Innovation in Experience Design Award' at IndieCade 2022, along with numerous other accolades, solidifying its status as a groundbreaking documentary game. Atuel has also been showcased at high-profile events such as the Marché du Film at Cannes and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, further highlighting its impact on the indie gaming scene.

What Do You Do in Atuel, the Documentary Game?
Atuel immerses players in the stunning yet climate-affected Atuel River Valley in Argentina. Rather than a traditional game, Atuel offers an immersive experience where players shapeshift into various animals and elements of the ecosystem, becoming an integral part of the landscape. One moment you might be soaring through the sky as a bird, and the next, you're flowing as the river itself. This unique gameplay is complemented by real-life interviews with historians, biologists, geologists, and local residents, who share insights into the region's history, its current state, and the looming impact of climate change.
Matajuegos partnered with the international documentary team, The 12.01 Project, to weave these compelling stories into the fabric of the game. The visuals, inspired by the Cuyo desert, create an almost otherworldly atmosphere that sets Atuel apart from other games.
While Android pre-registration is pending, you can visit the Steam page or the official website for more information. Once Atuel hits mobile platforms, it will feature localization in seven new languages and full controller support, enhancing accessibility for a global audience.
