AMD has unveiled its next-generation Ryzen 8000 series processors, specifically designed for gaming laptops, with the flagship being the Ryzen 9 8945HX. Unlike the earlier Ryzen AI 300 series, these new chips are based on the previous Zen 4 architecture rather than the newer Zen 5.
AMD is introducing four new processors tailored for high-performance gaming laptops. The Ryzen 9 8945HX leads the pack with 16 cores, 32 threads, and a boost clock reaching up to 5.4GHz. At the other end, the Ryzen 7 8745HX comes with 8 cores, 16 threads, and a boost clock of 5.1GHz. These new processors closely resemble their last-generation counterparts, such as the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX, which also features 16 cores and a 5.4GHz boost clock with 80MB of cache.
Despite being based on the last-generation architecture, these processors are designed to pair with the most powerful graphics chips in high-end gaming laptops. For instance, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Mobile, which I reviewed earlier this year, showed performance limitations when paired with the lower-power AMD Ryzen AI HX 370 on the Zen 5 architecture. In contrast, the Ryzen 9 8945HX can operate within a configurable TDP of 55W to 75W, which should significantly enhance performance. Although a Zen 5 chip at the same power level would have provided even greater improvements, the Ryzen 8000 series still promises robust performance for gaming enthusiasts.
