Hello gaming enthusiasts, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for August 29th, 2024! Today's roundup features a substantial lineup of new game releases, forming the core of this Thursday's update. We'll also explore a noteworthy selection of sales. Let's dive into the games!
Featured New Releases
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99)
The Famicom Detective Club franchise returns after a lengthy hiatus with a new installment. This latest case stays true to the original games' style, both its strengths and weaknesses. A fresh mystery awaits, presented similarly to the recent Switch remakes. Can you crack this latest serial murder case? My review is forthcoming.
Gundam Breaker 4 ($59.99)
Mikhail's comprehensive review provides an in-depth look at this title's gameplay and Switch performance. In short: build and battle Gunpla. While the Switch port naturally lags behind other versions in performance, it's still a perfectly playable experience. Check out Mikhail's insightful review for a complete analysis.
Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn ($19.99)
Tengo Project continues its impressive streak of remakes/reimaginings of classic titles. Following successful revivals of Wild Guns Reloaded, The Ninja Saviors, and Pocky & Rocky, they now tackle an 8-bit classic. This adaptation deviates more significantly from its source material than their previous projects. However, fans of classic-style action-platformers will find much to enjoy. My review will be published early next week.
Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)
This Valfaris sequel offers a departure from its predecessor's gameplay. It's a 2.5D side-scrolling shooter, and a solid entry in the genre. While the genre shift may surprise some, embracing the change reveals a highly enjoyable experience. A review is on its way.
Nour: Play With Your Food ($9.99)
I'll admit, I'm a bit puzzled by this one. The food imagery is stunning, but the gameplay remains unclear. Photography? Secret-finding? Perhaps Mikhail will shed some light on this intriguing title.
Monster Jam Showdown ($49.99)
If you're a fan of monster trucks, this game might be for you. It features both local and online multiplayer, along with various game modes. Reception on other platforms has been mixed, but it might appeal to those with a limited selection of monster truck games.
WitchSpring R ($39.99)
This appears to be a remake of the original WitchSpring. Previously a mobile title often compared to the Atelier series, its price point now approaches that of a full Atelier game. While the price might be a concern, it does seem to be the most visually appealing WitchSpring title yet.
Depths of Sanity ($19.99)
An underwater exploration game with a fantastical horror theme. You investigate the disappearance of your crew within a vast, dangerous underwater world. Combat is involved. Well-received on other platforms, it's likely to find a dedicated following on Switch.
Voltaire: The Vegan Vampire ($19.99)
Voltaire, a vegan vampire, rebels against his bloodthirsty father. Gameplay involves farming and combat as you fend off your father's attempts to thwart your lifestyle. While I'm personally a bit fatigued by the genre, fans of farming/action games might find this appealing.
Marble Abduction! Patti Hattu ($11.79)
A marble-rolling game featuring seventy stages and eighty marbles to collect. Secret collectibles and challenges add to the replayability. If you enjoy fast-paced marble-rolling games, this is a substantial offering.
Leo: The Firefighter Cat ($24.99)
A firefighting game with a kid-friendly approach. Twenty missions are included. While not overly realistic, it might appeal to younger gamers interested in firefighting themes.
Gori: Cuddly Carnage ($21.99)
A grotesque action game starring a hoverboarding cat. While the core gameplay is reportedly decent, the Switch version suffers from technical issues affecting the overall experience. Consider this if you're not overly sensitive to framerate issues.
Arcade Archives Finalizer Super Transformation ($7.99)
A 1985 Konami vertical shooter featuring a transforming robot protagonist. A charming, classic-style shooter with power-ups and transformations.
EGGCONSOLE Xanadu Scenario II PC-8801mkIISR ($6.49)
An early video game expansion pack introducing a new underworld to explore. Gameplay is similar to the original Xanadu, but with increased difficulty. Notable for featuring the debut work of legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro.
The Backrooms: Survival ($10.99)
A blend of horror, survival, and roguelite elements. Supports up to ten online players, which is the recommended way to play. The solo experience might be more niche due to its repetitive nature.
Can of Wormholes ($19.99)
A clever puzzle game where you, a sentient tin can, must deal with worms. One hundred hand-crafted puzzles are included, with fresh ideas introduced throughout. Highly recommended for puzzle game fans.
Ninja I & II ($9.99)
Two NES-style microgames with a ninja theme. Features competitive local multiplayer or CPU opponents.
Dice Make 10! ($3.99)
A surprisingly fun puzzle game with two modes: falling blocks and tile placement. The goal is to create rows or columns where the dice faces add up to multiples of ten.
