The cast for Star Wars: Starfighter is coming together, with reports indicating Mia Goth is in talks to join Ryan Gosling in the upcoming science fiction project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Goth, widely recognized for her roles as Maxine Minx and Pearl in the X horror film series, is set to portray an antagonist in the Star Wars film directed by Shawn Levy of Deadpool & Wolverine fame. Filming is scheduled to begin in England this autumn, targeting a theatrical release on May 28, 2027.

The report adds that Gosling's character is tasked with safeguarding his young nephew from dangerous adversaries, one of whom will be played by Goth. Lucasfilm has not provided an official statement on the casting.

Regarding the film's placement in the Star Wars timeline, Starfighter is set five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, the final chapter of the sequel trilogy. Director Shawn Levy has emphasized that the film is a standalone story. "This is a standalone film—neither a prequel nor a sequel," he explained at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in April. "It's a fresh adventure set in an unexplored era."

Starfighter is positioned to be the next Star Wars movie following 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. The title shares its name with a series of video games from the PS2/Xbox generation, including Star Wars: Starfighter (2001) and its sequel, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter (2002). However, the film is not expected to draw narrative elements from those games.

The Rise of Skywalker concludes with the ultimate defeat of Emperor Palpatine, though it offers limited details about the galaxy's condition following the Battle of Exegol. Daisy Ridley is confirmed to reprise her role in a Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed sequel, which will follow Rey's efforts to restore the Jedi Order approximately 15 years after the events of the previous film. Starfighter, therefore, takes place earlier in the timeline.
