Andor Showrunner Confirms Star Wars Horror Series in Development

Authore: NatalieUpdate:Jan 09,2026

According to Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy, Disney is secretly developing a Star Wars horror project.

In a recent interview with Business Insider, the creative force behind the latest critically acclaimed addition to the galaxy far, far away discussed Lucasfilm's behind-the-scenes activities. When questioned about how he might approach a darker Star Wars story, he hinted that Disney is already moving forward with such an idea.

"They're doing that. I think they're doing that," Gilroy remarked regarding the Star Wars horror project. "I believe that's in development, yes."

If true, this would finally allow Star Wars to delve into the Dark Side in a way never before seen on screen. However, the exact nature of the project remains a mystery. It could take shape as a television series, a film, or something entirely different, and there is no information about who is creatively leading the effort. It may be years before more details emerge about what Lucasfilm is planning for a horror-themed Star Wars project, but Gilroy's comments at least indicate that the idea is being considered at Disney.

"With the right creator, the right timing, and the right atmosphere… anything is possible," Gilroy added, reflecting on his experience with Andor. "So, I hope our show resonates with audiences, allowing us to pay forward the support we received from 'The Mandalorian' and provide a strong tailwind for others looking to create something fresh and exciting."

A full-fledged Star Wars horror film has been a long-held dream for countless fans—even Mark Hamill has expressed interest. While the expansive universe has spent decades focusing on the Skywalkers and their numerous supporting characters, there is still ample opportunity to explore its darker, uncharted territories. Although some spin-offs have approached Star Wars from a more frightening angle, major productions have typically stuck to family-friendly narratives.

Andor has distinguished itself as not only one of the more mature Star Wars stories but also one of the most critically praised. It garnered significant attention with its first season in 2022 and continues to be a cherished part of the franchise today (we awarded it a 9/10 in our review).

Gilroy and the rest of the production team will soon satisfy fans' anticipation when Andor Season 2 debuts its first three episodes on April 22.
