Sony Has Established a New AAA PlayStation Studio

PlayStation Unveils a New AAA Studio in Los Angeles

Sony Interactive Entertainment has quietly established a new, unannounced AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks the 20th first-party studio under the PlayStation umbrella and is currently developing a highly anticipated, original AAA title for the PS5.

The gaming community is buzzing with excitement, as PlayStation's first-party studios consistently deliver critically acclaimed and commercially successful games. Fans eagerly await news from established giants like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games, and the addition of this mystery studio only intensifies the anticipation. Sony's recent acquisitions of Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite further demonstrate their commitment to expanding their first-party development capabilities.

The existence of this new studio was revealed through a job listing for a Project Senior Producer. The listing explicitly mentions a "newly-established AAA studio" based in Los Angeles, working on a "ground-breaking" original IP.

Several theories circulate regarding the studio's origins. One possibility is that it incorporates a team spun off from Bungie following the July 2024 layoffs, specifically those involved in Bungie's Gummybears incubation project. Approximately 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment over several quarters.

Another strong contender is the team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer. Blundell co-founded Deviation Games, which was developing a AAA PS5 title before its closure in March 2024. Following Blundell's departure from Deviation Games in 2022, many former Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation, forming a new team under Blundell's leadership. Given the longer development timeline, this team is a more likely candidate for the new Los Angeles studio.

While the specifics of Blundell's project remain undisclosed, speculation suggests it may be a continuation or reimagining of Deviation Games' abandoned AAA title. Although any official announcements from Sony are likely years away, the confirmation of another first-party PlayStation game in development is undeniably exciting news for fans.
