The highly anticipated trailer for Rust, the upcoming movie featuring Alec Baldwin, has finally been released. This project took a tragic turn during production when a prop gun, handled by Baldwin, tragically resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza on October 22, 2021. Set to premiere in theaters on May 2, 2025, the film continues to stir conversation within the industry.
According to the official synopsis, Rust is set in 1880s Kansas and follows recently orphaned Lucas McCalister (played by Patrick Scott McDermott), who mistakenly kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang. In a surprising twist, his estranged grandfather, infamous outlaw Harland Rust (Alec Baldwin), rescues him from jail and embarks on a perilous escape toward Mexico.
Chased relentlessly by U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and ruthless bounty hunter "Preacher" (Travis Fimmel), the duo must navigate the unforgiving wilds while staying one step ahead of their pursuers.
During filming, the fatal incident occurred when Baldwin was demonstrating how to draw his prop gun from its holster. The weapon, intended to be a "cold gun" with no live ammunition, discharged unexpectedly. Baldwin was not charged following the tragedy, while armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, responsible for preparing the firearm, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. First assistant director David Halls, tasked with verifying the gun's safety, pleaded no contest to negligent use of a deadly weapon and received six months of probation.Despite the controversy surrounding its production, Rust made its debut at Poland's Camerimage Film Festival in November 2024, paying tribute to Hutchins in the credits. Director Joel Souza attended the event, honoring the memory of his late colleague. "[Halyna] loved this place so much—it was almost as dear to her as being on set," he remarked. "Thank you for coming today to celebrate her incredible artistry."
