Summary

  • Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5) and Red Dead Redemption 2 continue to achieve remarkable sales years after their initial releases.
  • In December 2024, GTA 5 secured the third spot as the best-selling PS5 game in both the US/Canada and Europe.
  • During the same month, Red Dead Redemption 2 claimed the top spot as the best-selling PS4 game in the United States and second place in Europe.

Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5, despite their years on the market, continue to demonstrate exceptional sales performance. Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption franchises have consistently produced critically acclaimed open-world games, and these latest entries perfectly showcase the studio's renowned quality and success.

Released in 2013, Grand Theft Auto 5 thrust players into the roles of three aspiring criminals navigating the sprawling, chaotic city of Los Santos. Its initial success was amplified by subsequent releases on multiple platforms and the immensely popular online multiplayer component, GTA Online. This led to GTA 5 becoming one of the best-selling entertainment products of all time. Red Dead Redemption 2, launched in 2018, transported players to the untamed American Old West, allowing them to experience the story through the eyes of outlaw Arthur Morgan. This title also achieved significant critical acclaim and commercial success.

Although nearly twelve years have passed since GTA 5's debut and almost seven since Red Dead Redemption 2's release, both open-world titles maintain strong sales. PlayStation's December 2024 download charts reveal GTA 5 as the third best-selling PS5 title in both US/Canada and Europe, and fifth on the PS4 charts in those same regions. Red Dead Redemption 2 topped the US PS4 sales charts and secured second place in Europe, trailing only EA Sports FC 25.

GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 Remain at the Top of PlayStation Sales Charts

According to European 2024 GSD figures (as reported by VGC), Grand Theft Auto 5 secured the fourth position as the best-selling game of the year, climbing from fifth place in 2023. Red Dead Redemption 2 also saw a rise, moving up to seventh place from eighth in the same region. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, recently announced that GTA 5 has surpassed 205 million units sold, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has exceeded 67 million copies sold.

The enduring success of these established titles underscores the lasting appeal of Rockstar's games. Fans eagerly anticipate the future of both franchises: the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for release later this year, while rumors suggest a potential port of Red Dead Redemption 2 to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
