Harry Potter: Magic Awakened EOS Announced, Guess The Spells Didn’t Work After All!

NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in select regions. The end-of-service (EOS) announcement affects the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, with servers ceasing operation on October 29th, 2024. Players in Asia and certain MENA regions can continue playing.

Initially released in China in September 2021 to positive reception, the game's global launch in June 2022, following delays and pre-registrations in February 2022, failed to replicate the initial success.

The game's demise, despite its initially appealing Clash Royale-inspired gameplay and Hogwarts atmosphere, is attributed to several factors. Reddit discussions highlight player frustration over a shift towards pay-to-win mechanics. A controversial rework of the reward system, which negatively impacted skilled free-to-play players, is cited as a major contributing factor. Progression slowed significantly for non-spending players following nerfs.

The game has already been removed from the Google Play Store in the affected regions (as of August 26th). However, players in unaffected regions can still experience the dorm life, classes, secrets, and wizard duels.
