Earthblade Cancelled: Celeste Developers Announce Project Closure
The highly anticipated Earthblade, from the creators of the acclaimed indie game Celeste, has been cancelled. This decision, announced by Extremely OK Games (EXOK), follows significant internal challenges.
Internal Disagreements Lead to Cancellation
In a heartfelt statement on their website, EXOK Director Maddy Thorson detailed the difficult circumstances that led to Earthblade's cancellation. The announcement, titled "Final Earthblade Update," revealed a fracture within the team, primarily involving Thorson, programmer Noel Berry, and former art director Pedro Medeiros. A disagreement concerning the intellectual property rights of Celeste is cited as a central point of conflict.
Thorson expressed remorse for disappointing fans and acknowledged the emotional toll the situation has taken on the team. While a resolution was reached, it resulted in Medeiros leaving EXOK to pursue his own project, Neverway. Thorson emphasized that Medeiros and his team are not to be blamed and stressed the importance of maintaining respect within the gaming community.
The loss of Medeiros, coupled with the project's slower-than-expected progress and the pressure stemming from Celeste's success, ultimately led to the decision to cancel Earthblade. Thorson admitted the team had lost its way and that cancelling the game was the best course of action.
EXOK's Future Focus
With a reduced team, Thorson and Berry plan to refocus on smaller-scale projects, aiming to recapture the creative spirit of their earlier works like Celeste and TowerFall. They expressed hope for future collaborations with former team members. The statement concluded on a positive note, emphasizing a return to their roots and a renewed focus on joyful creation.
Earthblade, envisioned as an explor-action platformer, would have followed the journey of Névoa, a child of Fate, as they explored a ruined Earth.
