In *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, The Tournament is unlocked by interacting with a character named Gyoji, who resides in Yamato. After eliminating several members of The Shinbakufu, you’ll find him camped outside your hideout, eager to speak about a secret challenge. This hidden fighting arena is located at the Ominesanji Temple in Southeastern Yamato. To make future visits easier, look for the Ominesanji Outlook viewpoint nearby—synchronize with it to create a fast travel point. This will allow you to return quickly or switch characters without hassle.

Once you arrive at the temple, speak with Gyoji again. He will explain that you must complete four one-on-one duels before facing the ultimate champion. After this brief cutscene, you can begin the challenge by ringing the bell to start the first fight.

How to Complete The Tournament in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

The Tournament is a series of high-intensity, consecutive duels that will test your combat reflexes and strategy. Between each round, you have the freedom to pause and prepare as long or as briefly as you like—just remember to ring the bell to trigger the next opponent. During these breaks, be sure to heal using rations and adjust your gear if necessary.

To defeat each fighter efficiently, we recommend equipping a Long Katana for Yasuke and mastering the art of dodging and parrying to put enemies into vulnerable states. Additionally, abilities such as Power Dash and Payback become invaluable when adrenaline is available.

Knowing your opponents' weapons can also help you tailor your approach. Here's a breakdown of each fighter:

  • Lady Masago: Naginata
  • Lord Suguru: Katana
  • Lord Hokuto: Kanabo (club-like weapon)
  • Lady O-Sen: Dual Poison Katanas and ranged attacks
  • Lord Unkai: Naginata with healing abilities when out of range

After completing all five matches, speak with Gyoji once more at the top of the hill. He will express his gratitude for freeing him and promise to summon you when new challengers arise. At this point, the “Test Your Might” trophy should unlock automatically during the dialogue exchange.

Best Loadout and Skills for The Tournament in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

As previously mentioned, the Long Katana is the ideal weapon choice for The Tournament. Equip the highest-rarity version you own and upgrade it fully at your hideout’s blacksmith. Applying engravings that boost Armor Damage or Armor Piercing will give you a significant edge. However, your armor selection may be even more crucial.

Before entering The Tournament, obtain two key armor sets: the Samurai Daimyo Armor of Legend, earned by defeating The Ox (a member of The Shinbakufu), and the Protector’s Armor, acquired by completing one of the Castle missions. The Samurai Daimyo Armor increases damage by 75% but caps your health at 25%, making precise parrying essential. Meanwhile, the Protector’s Armor allows you to parry unblockable attacks—an absolute game-changer when combined with the former set.

For skill progression, invest Mastery points heavily into both the Long Katana and Samurai trees. Prioritize maxing out the Combat Expert perk to boost melee damage, and ensure you've unlocked Power Dash and Payback for maximum efficiency in battle.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S starting March 20th, 2025. Prepare wisely, sharpen your blade, and step into the arena ready to prove your might.
