Nintendo has finally unveiled the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, and along with it, the much-awaited Mario Kart 9. Fans have quickly noticed that one character in particular, Donkey Kong, has undergone a significant redesign, drawing inspiration from The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The trailer showcased over a dozen characters, and while most appeared as fans expected, Donkey Kong's new look stood out prominently. For years, even decades, Donkey Kong's design has remained consistent across various titles such as Mario Kart 8, Mario Tennis, and Donkey Kong Country Returns. However, the blockbuster success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie introduced a new design for the character, which Nintendo seems eager to integrate into its games.

The console reveal trailer offered a few hints about the Nintendo Switch 2, primarily focusing on its appearance. It confirmed that the hardware is largely backwards compatible, introduced a mysterious new button on the Joy-Cons, and supported a theory about using the controller as a mouse. While the trailer only hinted at a 2025 release window, the Nintendo Switch 2 is not expected to hit the market until at least June due to numerous hands-on events scheduled worldwide, with registration opening soon.
