"Ecco the Dolphin Reboot: New Game in Development"

Authore: EricUpdate:May 26,2025

The creator of Ecco the Dolphin, Ed Annunziata, has announced exciting developments for fans of the iconic series. In a recent interview on Xbox Wire, Annunziata revealed that not only are remakes of the original Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time in the works, but a brand new third installment is also being developed. This news comes as a thrilling surprise, especially given that the last mainline entry, Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, was released on Dreamcast 25 years ago in 2000, without Annunziata's involvement. A planned sequel, Ecco 2: Sentinels of the Universe, was unfortunately cancelled.

Annunziata's announcement has sparked enthusiasm among fans, with one expressing a desire to use a secret password from the end of Ecco: The Tides of Time, while another highlighted the series' famously complex plot. Despite the excitement, specific release dates remain undisclosed, though a countdown on the official Ecco the Dolphin website suggests that fans might have to wait around a year before diving back into Ecco's world.

Originally launched in 1992 on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Ecco the Dolphin was followed by Ecco: The Tides of Time in 1994. The series also includes educational titles Ecco Jr. and Ecco Jr. and the Great Ocean Treasure Hunt, released in 1995. In Ecco the Dolphin, players guide the titular dolphin through treacherous environments to reunite with his pod after their world is devastated by a mysterious vortex. While the 2000 remake received mixed reviews, with IGN's Ecco the Dolphin review suggesting that the game's charm may not have aged well, Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future was more positively received, earning a 7.6 from IGN for its engaging story and impressive visuals.
