Cette décision remet directement en question la domination de Nintendo sur le marché des ordinateurs de poche, établie depuis l'ère Game Boy et se poursuivant avec la Nintendo Switch, et anticipe l'entrée prévue de Microsoft dans l'espace.

Ce nouvel ordinateur de poche devrait s'appuyer sur le PlayStation Portal, sorti l'année dernière. Alors que le portail proposait le streaming de jeux PS5, son accueil était mitigé. Un nouvel appareil capable de jouer en natif sur PS5 pourrait élargir considérablement l'attrait de Sony, surtout compte tenu des récentes augmentations de prix de la PS5.
