This week, Konami surprised classic RPG fans with a Suikoden-focused livestream, a welcome event given the franchise's long hiatus since a Japan-only PSP release over a decade ago. The announcements were a mixed bag: a Suikoden anime and a new mobile game, Suikoden: Star Leap, complete with gacha mechanics.
Let's start with the good news: Suikoden: The Anime. Based on Suikoden II, this will be Konami's first animation production. Details remain scarce, including international availability, but a brief scene was shown:
This is exciting for longtime fans and could be a great introduction for newcomers, provided it gets a global release.
The Suikoden: Star Leap announcement, however, is more divisive. This new game boasts beautiful Octopath Traveler-esque visuals, a storyline set between Suikoden I and V, and the series' traditional 108 characters.
The catch? It's a mobile game with gacha mechanics and ongoing monetization. This is a departure for the series, previously known for its premium console and PC releases. The impact of this monetization on gameplay and character collection remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, fans can enjoy the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, which received a new trailer during the livestream and launches March 6th.
