Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 7 has arrived, and the player response is overwhelmingly positive, especially regarding the sheer volume of mods.

BG3 Modding: A Phenomenal Success

Over 3 Million Mod Installs Reported

Following Patch 7's release on September 5th, the modding community exploded. Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke tweeted that over one million mods were installed in under 24 hours, declaring modding "pretty big." This was quickly surpassed; Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, reported over 3 million installs and counting.

Patch 7 introduced significant new content, including wicked new endings, improved split-screen, and the highly anticipated Larian-developed Mod Manager. This built-in tool simplifies browsing, installing, and managing mods directly within the game.

The existing modding tools, available separately on Steam, empower creators to build their own narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. Modders can incorporate custom scripts, perform basic debugging, and publish directly from the toolkit.

Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon

PC Gamer highlighted a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) which unlocks a full level editor and reactivates previously disabled features in Larian's editor. This follows Larian's previous cautious approach to providing full development tool access, as Vincke stated to PC Gamer, "We are a game development company, we're not a tools company." While acknowledging player creativity, Larian didn't initially intend to support all development tools for public use.

Larian aims to support cross-platform modding, a project currently underway. Vincke acknowledged the complexity, stating it's "not the easiest thing in the world" due to console and PC compatibility requirements. The PC version will launch first, with console support following after addressing potential issues and navigating submission processes.

Beyond modding, Patch 7 delivers a wealth of improvements: refined UI, new animations, expanded dialogue, numerous bug fixes, and performance enhancements. With further updates planned, Larian's continued commitment to modding, particularly cross-platform functionality, is highly anticipated.
